Discover how some of the earliest metal tools were produced in prehistoric Britain, with archaeological metalworker Rowan Taylor AWCB. Using a bellows-driven furnace, you will melt copper in order to cast an axe in a carved stone mould.
You will then be guided through the process of hardening the copper axe, and then carve and prepare a wooden handle for it from a piece of crook wood, before fitting the axe to the haft using leather and tar.
At the end of the weekend, you will go home with a fully usable copper axe, similar to that of Otzi the Iceman.
The memorable workshop will be delivered in the enclosed museum courtyard.
Don’t miss this rare and exciting opportunity to learn an ancient and enduring skill and create a cooper axe of your own.
