Shrewsbury Prison Christmas Market

Sat-Sun 10-11 December 2022 Shrewsbury Prison Christmas Market

A Christmas Market with a difference.

Back for its 2nd year, and due to last year’s success Shrewsbury Prison Christmas Market will be running over 2 days – Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th December. Once again its completely free to enter.

Full of festive atmosphere, showcasing many different gifts, crafts, clothing, games, toys, and street food suppliers, but with one big twist. It’s set within the grounds of Shrewsbury Prison, Shropshire’s top rated tourist destination and winner of TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice 2022 Award.

Upon arrival guests will enter through the prison’s 200-year-old gates and find themselves in the prison courtyard. This is the first area prisoners would have seen behind the walls and where their journey behind bars would have begun.

From here visitors can see the outside of the original Georgian Governors house, which in more recent years was used as the Governor’s Office, from which the prison was run.

In the exercise yard, a range of street food vendors and drink providers can be found, serving delicious foods, cakes, mince pies and of course lovely helpings of mulled wine to warm visitors on a chilly winter’s day.

The main market is situated in the buildings at the rear of the prison site, which include the visits area, the chapel, and sports hall. Browse through more than 65 stalls offering Christmas gifts, decorations, clothing and much more from local independent businesses.

Shrewsbury Prison has partnered with ‘Prison Museum Trust’, a charity committed to protecting, preserving and exhibiting artefacts of prison history & heritage.

This Christmas, the prison will be giving back to the people of Shrewsbury once again, by offering up their historic site to play host to this wonderful market.

As previous years there will be no entry costs to visitors, so the whole market can be accessed for FREE.

Donations will be collected on the day for the Prison Museum Trust to support their work in establishing prison museums, which Shrewsbury Prison would love to see visit in 2023. Donations are not mandatory and there is no obligation, Shrewsbury Prison simply asks if you are able to spare a small donation, please support this worthy cause.

For anyone interested in taking a stall please download and return the Stallholders Information and Application Forms by following the link. Visitors can also register their FREE tickets here.

Shrewsbury Prison is ideally situated in central Shrewsbury, with great access to local transport links.

Entry to Shrewsbury Prison attraction is not included, but tickets for the attraction can be purchased in advance or on the day.
