Castle Artisan Market: A Modern Spin on a Medieval Tradition in Market Drayton

Published on Monday May 12th, 2025

Markets are in the very DNA of Market Drayton. The town earned its “Market” title way back in 1245, when King Henry III granted it the right to hold weekly markets. Over 700 years later, the lively hum of traders and the buzz of shoppers still fills Cheshire Street, keeping that rich tradition alive—and now, thanks to the Artisan Market, there’s a fresh, creative energy drawing crowds from across the region.

A Curated Market with Heart

Held on the second Saturday of each month, from 9am to 3pm, Artisan Market brings over 25 independent stalls to the heart of Market Drayton. But this isn’t just any market. It’s carefully curated, with each stall chosen to ensure variety, quality, and a unique experience for every visitor.

From handcrafted jewellery and original art to homemade cakes, savoury delights, puddings, candles, and even local wines—there’s something for everyone. Plus, thanks to a rotating selection of stallholders, no two markets are ever quite the same.

“We want each visit to feel fresh,” says market organiser Mike, who runs the business alongside his son, Jake. “That’s why we rotate new traders in regularly. It’s not just good for customers—it keeps things exciting for the stallholders too.”

Local Traders, Local Stories

Most of the traders at Artisan Market come from within a 45-minute radius. The team believes in supporting local small businesses, keeping things sustainable, and building strong community connections. In fact, the market is so popular with traders that there’s now a waiting list to join.

And the customer love is mutual. Thanks to dedicated social media pages, product showcases, and regular competitions, each market feels like a mini festival—with visitors returning month after month.

From Puddings to Pop-Ups: A Local Success Story

The Artisan Market was born out of a big career leap. In 2019, Mike left a career in IT to start making traditional puddings, selling them at local markets. By 2020, Newcastle-under-Lyme Council approached him to create a market in town, and things snowballed. Now operating in seven locations across Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire, Castle Artisan Markets have become a hallmark of quality, community, and creativity.

And Market Drayton? It’s one of their proudest locations.
