Celebrate National Poetry Day at the Poetry Pharmacy, where you can pay with a poem!

This Thursday in celebration of National Poetry Day, budding bards and professional poets alike will be able to pay for their coffee with a poem at the Poetry Pharmacy in Bishop’s Castle.

Visitors to the book shop can sample flasks of coffees appropriately named after poets, as well as teas and tisanes from the Dispensary café, in exchange for a freshly minted poem of their own – but they may be called upon to read their poems aloud!

In keeping with the theme for this year’s National Poetry Day, the Environment, visitors can also pick up a Wild Remedy bath bomb from the Poetry Pharmacy’s recent collaboration with Lush, a line of three themed bath bombs, each with a snippet of poetry at their heart.

About the Poetry Pharmacy

The Poetry Pharmacy is the world’s first walk-in pharmacy prescribing poems to the public. Founded nearly ten years ago from the back of a vintage ambulance by Deborah Alma – the Emergency Poet – the pharmacy found its permanent home in a beautiful Victorian shop in Bishop’s Castle in 2019. Dispensing poetry, non-fiction, and literary artifacts for the discerning customer, the Poetry Pharmacy is also host to weekly events including workshops, readings and book launches year round.

‘Here, instead of sleeping pills and multivitamins, customers will be offered prescriptions of Derek Walcott and Elizabeth Bishop.’ – Alison Flood, The Guardian

‘Everyone will love this beacon of positivity’ – Pat Edwards, Director of Welshpool Poetry Festival

Did you know Shrewsbury Castle's foundations were laid in 1083 by the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery?
Montgomery, a cousin of William the Conqueror, earned this castle and more as a thank-you for his aid during the Norman conquest.

From royal stronghold to a 16th-century transformation, Shrewsbury Castle has quite the story. Now, it stands majestically, housing the Shropshire Regimental Museum. 👑🏰 Ready to step into the pages of history?
