Heavy Horse Weekend

The sound of hooves will ring out on the cobbled streets of Blists Hill Victorian Town as our popular Heavy Horse Weekend returns. Our much-loved resident Shire horses will be joined by several other heavy horses across the weekend; demonstrating the work of horses in industrial times.

Watch as these magnificent animals move around the town, pulling an assortment of trade vehicles and wearing a variety of harnesses. Learn about the role of horses in Industrial Britain and watch a captivating ‘Horse Logging’ demonstration in the woods!

Learn about the art of plaiting a horse’s mane ready for showing, how to harness a heavy horse, and watch as the visiting Farrier demonstrates the skills needed to shoe a horse. There’ll also be the chance to get up close to our four legged friends and see the town from up high on the Horse Bus, which will be running throughout the weekend.

In addition to our Heavy Horse activities, you’ll be able to enjoy all that Blists Hill Victorian Town has to offer, from the historic town to our fantastic fairground and the Madeley Wood Co. Outdoor Adventure.

? Assistance dogs only on Heavy Horse Weekend ?

Blists Hill Victorian Town is a Shire Horse Society Approved Visitor Centre.

"🏰✨ Dive into the heart of Shrewsbury's Castle Quarter – the epicenter of history and grandeur! 🏰 Home to four of the town's largest historic treasures – Shrewsbury Castle, Library, Prison, and Train Station.

Did you know Shrewsbury Castle's foundations were laid in 1083 by the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery?
Montgomery, a cousin of William the Conqueror, earned this castle and more as a thank-you for his aid during the Norman conquest.

From royal stronghold to a 16th-century transformation, Shrewsbury Castle has quite the story. Now, it stands majestically, housing the Shropshire Regimental Museum. 👑🏰 Ready to step into the pages of history?
